Yaskawa Electric was founded in April 1915 in Kurosaki, Kitakyushu, Japan, by Daigorou Yasukawa with support from his elder brothers, delivering its first product — a three-phase induction motor — in 1917. The company developed the world's first DC servo motor, the Minertia motor, in 1958, and registered the term "Mechatronics" as a trademark in 1969, coining a discipline the whole industry now uses. Yaskawa's Motoman-L10, completed in 1977, was Japan's first fully electric industrial robot, and its Sigma-series AC servo drives — launched in 1992 and now in their seventh generation — remain the cornerstone of its motion control business, with cumulative servo motor shipments surpassing 20 million units in 2020. Headquartered in Kitakyushu, Yaskawa reported consolidated net sales of ¥537.7 billion for fiscal year 2025.
