Westcode Semiconductors traces its origins to the 1920s in London as part of the Westinghouse Brake & Signal Company, initially manufacturing copper oxide-based semiconductors before establishing manufacturing at its Chippenham, England site in the 1930s. The company introduced the world's first commercial rectifier in the early 1920s, progressed through selenium and germanium-based devices, and introduced silicon power devices in 1957 — technology still used in its products today. After passing through owners including Hawker Siddeley and BTR, Westcode was acquired by IXYS Corporation in December 2001, renamed IXYS UK Westcode Ltd in 2012, and continues today (following IXYS's 2018 acquisition by Littelfuse) as a leading UK manufacturer of high-power thyristors, diodes and press-pack IGBTs for traction, induction heating, welding and rectifier applications.
