Trane traces its origins to 1885, when Norwegian immigrant James Trane opened a plumbing and pipe-fitting shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and — driven by the region's harsh winters — invented a low-pressure steam heating system he called the Trane Vapor Heating System. James and his son Reuben began manufacturing operations in 1910 and formally incorporated The Trane Company in 1913, with Reuben's 1923 convector radiator establishing the company's reputation for innovation. Trane pioneered large-building air conditioning in 1938 with the industry's first hermetic centrifugal refrigeration machine, the Turbovac, and went on to become one of the world's leading HVAC brands — acquired by American Standard Companies in 1984, then Ingersoll Rand in 2008, before the parent company was renamed Trane Technologies in 2020 following a corporate spin-off.
