Toshiba traces its roots to 1875, when Hisashige Tanaka — nicknamed "the Edison of Japan" for his inventions including mechanical dolls and a perpetual clock — founded Tanaka Seizo-sho, Japan's first telegraph equipment manufacturer, in Tokyo. Separately, Ichisuke Fujioka developed Japan's first arc lamp in 1878 and founded Hakunetsu-sha & Co. in 1890 to manufacture light bulbs, later renamed Tokyo Electric Company. These two pioneering businesses merged in 1939 to form Tokyo Shibaura Electric Company, officially renamed Toshiba Corporation in 1978. Toshiba went on to develop Japan's first digital computers in 1954 and the first one-megabyte DRAM memory chip in 1985, and remains a major global manufacturer of industrial motors, power semiconductors and electrical equipment.
