TEAC Corporation was founded on 26 August 1953 in Tokyo, Japan, as the Tokyo Television Acoustic Company by Katsuma Tani, initially focused on acoustic and tape recording technology before merging with the Tokyo Electro-Acoustic Company in 1964 to form TEAC. Beyond its well-known consumer and professional audio products, TEAC became a major force in data storage technology, debuting the world's first 5.25-inch floppy disk drive in 1978 and going on to become the largest supplier of floppy disk drives through the 1980s and 1990s. TEAC's Information Products division extended this data storage expertise into industrial applications, and its floppy and optical disk drives remain a specialised legacy component category for maintaining older CNC machines, PLCs and industrial control systems that still rely on removable-media data storage.
