Simplex traces its origins to 1894, when Edward G. Watkins founded the Simplex Time Recorder Company in Gardner, Massachusetts, patenting one of the first practical time clocks and synchronized clock systems widely used in schools. The company's path into fire protection began in 1958 with its purchase of IBM's Time Equipment Division, which included IBM's fire protection division, and by 1979 Simplex had introduced the industry's first networked multiplex building control system handling fire alarm, security, HVAC and other functions in one integrated platform. Tyco International acquired Simplex Time Recorder Company in January 2001 for $1.15 billion, merging it with Grinnell Fire Protection to form SimplexGrinnell, which became part of Johnson Controls following the 2016 Tyco-Johnson Controls merger — today SimplexGrinnell operates as the world's largest fire protection company, continuing to sell fire and security products under the Simplex brand name.
