Rohde & Schwarz was founded on November 17, 1933 in Munich, Germany, when physicists Dr. Lothar Rohde and Dr. Hermann Schwarz — who had met as students at Jena University — rented a 120-square-metre apartment and converted it into an electrotechnical laboratory, initially named the Physikalisch-Technisches Entwicklungslabor (PTE). One of the company's early highlights was the world's first portable crystal clock, weighing just 36 kilograms compared to the wardrobe-sized crystal clocks of the era. Still privately owned by the Rohde and Schwarz families and headquartered in Munich, the company has grown into a global leader in electronic test and measurement, broadcast and media technology, and cybersecurity, generating roughly €3.16 billion in revenue with more than 15,000 employees.
