Rittal traces its founding to April 1961, when entrepreneur Rudolf Loh bought an old weaving mill in Rittershausen, in Germany's Hesse region, and launched the world's first standardised, off-the-shelf electrical enclosure — built on the simple idea that enclosures should be available immediately from stock rather than custom-built to order. The company, originally named Rudolf Loh Elektrogerätebau, was renamed Rittal in 1969 in honour of its Rittershausen roots, and passed to Rudolf's son Friedhelm Loh in 1974, who built the Friedhelm Loh Group around it. Now a global leader in enclosure technology and IT infrastructure with roughly 10,000 employees and 58 subsidiaries worldwide, Rittal's standard enclosures remain a default choice across control and switchgear engineering, IT, shipbuilding and countless other industries.
