Notifier was founded in 1949 in Waverly, Nebraska, by Oliver T. Joy alongside his wife Dr. Margaret Joy, who served as executive vice president, moving to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1956 and earning selection to provide the fire detection system for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. The company was sold to Emhart Corporation in 1968, acquired by Pittway Corporation in 1987, and relocated to a new 252,000 sq ft facility in Northford, Connecticut in 1988, before Honeywell International purchased Pittway in 1999, bringing Notifier into Honeywell's Life Safety Group. Now recognised as the world's largest manufacturer of fire alarm and voice evacuation systems with over 500 distributors worldwide, Notifier continues to manufacture conventional and intelligent fire alarm control panels, addressable monitor modules, mass notification systems and fire alarm networks, including its widely deployed ONYX Series platform.
