NEC Corporation was formed on 17 July 1899 in Japan as a joint venture between the Western Electric Company of the United States and two Japanese individuals, initially acting as a sales agent for Western Electric's telephone equipment before commencing its own manufacturing in Japan. Ownership passed through International Telephone & Telegraph (from 1925) and the Sumitomo family holding company (from 1932) before NEC's shares were sold to the public in 1948, and the company reached a landmark in 1958 by producing the NEAC 2201 — the world's first fully transistorized commercial computer. Headquartered in Tokyo, NEC grew into a global leader in IT services, telecommunications equipment and electronic devices including LCD display modules widely used as components in industrial HMI panels and control systems worldwide.
