Lutron Electronics Company was founded in 1961 in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, by physicist Joel Spira and his wife Ruth Spira, growing from Joel's 1959 invention of the world's first solid-state electronic dimmer — conceived in the spare bedroom of the couple's Manhattan apartment, drawing on silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) technology he had learned about during World War II. The couple's round Capri dimmer was the company's first product, replacing inefficient, heat-producing rheostat dimmers with a compact, energy-saving solid-state design that could switch electrical current on and off 120 times per second. Still privately held and headquartered in Coopersburg, Lutron now holds more than 2,700 worldwide patents and offers upwards of 15,000 energy-saving lighting and shading control products sold in over 100 countries, with its early inventions preserved at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
