Leuze electronic was founded on 1 January 1963 in Owen, Germany, by brothers Helmut, Christof and Adolf Leuze, who set up shop in part of an old weaving mill — the Leuze family's roots trace back to a mechanical cotton weaving and spinning mill established in the Lenningen Valley in 1861. Initially focused on developing electronic optical sensors for the textile, printing and paper industries the family already knew well, Leuze earned its first million in sales within four years and developed the first data transmission light barrier, the DDLS 78, in the 1970s. Still a family-owned business headquartered in Owen/Teck, southern Germany, Leuze marked its 60th anniversary in 2023 with sales of €322 million, and today operates 6 production sites and 21 sales subsidiaries worldwide as a recognised world leader in optical sensors for industrial automation.
