KONE traces its origins to 1908, when a machine repair shop named Tarmo was established in Helsinki, Finland, refurbishing used Strömberg electric motors and importing elevators from Sweden's Graham Brothers under license. Incorporated as KONE on 27 October 1910, the company ended its licensing agreement in 1918 to begin producing its own elevators, and grew steadily under four generations of the Herlin family — with a notably colourful moment in 1920, when KONE's technical director Walter Jakobsson and his wife Ludovika won Olympic gold in figure skating. KONE went on to pioneer the machine-room-less elevator and today ranks among the world's largest elevator and escalator manufacturers, headquartered in Espoo, Finland, with roughly 22,500 employees producing and installing 12,000+ units annually and maintenance contracts on hundreds of thousands of elevators worldwide.
