Kollmorgen traces its origins to Dr. Friedrich Kollmorgen's patented two-telescope design of 1911, formally incorporating in New York on 22 March 1916 to design and manufacture periscopes for the U.S. Navy's young submarine fleet — a role it held as the Navy's primary periscope supplier for decades. The company diversified into motion technologies starting in the 1960s through acquisitions including Inland Motor Corporation, whose founder Hugo Unruh had built generators and gyro motors for MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory and pioneered revolutionary "frameless torquer" motor designs. Now marking its 110th anniversary in 2026 and operating as a brand under Emerson Electric, Kollmorgen remains a global leader in high-performance motion control, supplying servo motors, drive electronics and automation systems used across electronic assembly, robotics, machine tools and semiconductor processing.
