Keyence was founded on 27 May 1974 in Osaka, Japan, by Takemitsu Takizaki — a former sales engineer who had already seen two earlier businesses go bankrupt — initially trading as Lead Electric Co., Ltd., selling photoelectric sensors and limit switches directly to factory engineers. The company rebranded to Keyence in 1986, a name derived from "KEY of sciENCE," and built its identity around a distinctive direct-sales, "fabless" business model that concentrates on product planning and development while outsourcing manufacturing to qualified partners. Now one of the highest market-capitalisation companies in Japan, Keyence employs over 12,000 people serving 350,000+ customers across 110 countries, supplying sensors, machine vision systems, measuring instruments, programmable controllers and laser markers for factory automation and quality control applications.
