IXYS Corporation was founded in 1983 in Santa Clara, California, by Dr. Nathan Zommer, with seed capital from a group of Silicon Valley venture capitalists led by Adler & Co. The company name was derived from the goal of "Integrated Control SYStems" (ICSYS) — combining the letters into IXYS to represent the integration of power and control technology. Originally a fabless power semiconductor company, IXYS grew into a global pioneer supplying power MOSFETs, IGBTs, diodes, thyristors and solid-state relays, providing power MOSFETs for the General Motors EV1 electric vehicle in 1989 and acquiring British semiconductor maker Westcode in 2001. IXYS was acquired by Littelfuse — the world leader in circuit protection — in January 2018, and its power semiconductor product lines continue today as part of the Littelfuse group.
