Infineon Technologies AG was founded on 1 April 1999 as a wholly owned spin-off of Siemens AG's semiconductor division, formed in response to a US$674 million pre-tax loss the division posted in fiscal 1998 amid harsh price erosion in the DRAM memory market. Led by former Siemens Semiconductor CEO Ulrich Schumacher, the newly independent company — its name blending "infinity" and "eon" — turned a US$800 million loss into a US$70 million profit within its first year, before going public on the Frankfurt and New York stock exchanges in March 2000 in an IPO that was roughly 33 times oversubscribed. Headquartered in Neubiberg near Munich, Germany, Infineon has since grown into the world's largest microcontroller manufacturer and Europe's largest semiconductor company, reporting approximately €15 billion in annual revenue and ranking as the global leader in power semiconductors used across automotive, industrial and IoT applications.
