Hubbell Incorporated traces its founding to 1888 as a proprietorship of inventor Harvey Hubbell II, who patented the two-prong electrical plug that became the industry standard for appliances, along with the pull-chain light bulb socket in 1896. The company was formally incorporated in Connecticut in 1905, having published a 12-page catalogue in 1901 listing 63 electrical products — by 1917 that catalogue had grown to 100 pages listing over 1,000 products, including 277 different light bulb sockets alone. A 1977 Forbes correspondent noted that "unless you are reading this on safari, there is probably a Harvey Hubbell invention within six feet of you right now." Today Hubbell operates more than 23 manufacturing divisions worldwide, producing wiring devices, lighting fixtures, hazardous-location products and electrical transmission and distribution equipment.
