Fanuc was founded in 1956 in Japan by Dr. Seiuemon Inaba, who pioneered the concept of numerical control (NC) for machine tools — the company's name stands for Fuji Automatic Numerical Control, reflecting its early ties to Fujitsu, from which it became fully independent in 1972. Fanuc shipped its first industrial robot in the late 1970s and, through joint ventures including GMFanuc Robotics (with General Motors, 1982) and GE Fanuc Automation (with General Electric, 1987 — a business now sold separately as GE Fanuc), grew into the world's largest supplier of CNC systems by market share and one of the largest industrial robot manufacturers globally, with its factory automation, robot and robomachine divisions still headquartered at the foot of Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture.
