Crestron Electronics was started by George Feldstein in 1969, working out of a room above the Cresskill Delicatessen in New Jersey after leaving his job as chief engineer at an industrial control and testing equipment firm. With no money, four kids and a mortgage, Feldstein began by cold-calling businesses offering to build or repair their equipment, designing controllers for slide projectors before formally incorporating as Crestron Electronics in May 1975. The breakthrough came with a wireless remote to control 35mm slide projectors and conference room drapes, followed by audio switches, video projectors and lighting control panels — installations eventually reached Microsoft, the Trump Tower penthouse, most Ivy League schools and the Pentagon Situation Room. Now headquartered in Rockleigh, New Jersey, and still privately held with over $2 billion in annual revenue and 5,000+ employees, Crestron remains the industry leader in control and automation systems for commercial and residential audiovisual environments.
