Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) traces its roots to Heavy Electricals (India) Limited, established on 29 August 1956, before being formally incorporated as BHEL on 13 November 1964 by the Government of India, with initial technological assistance from the Soviet Union. Converted into a public company in 1991, BHEL grew into India's largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise in the energy, industry and infrastructure sectors, producing everything from steam turbines, generators and boilers to industrial electrical machines, switchgear and automation and control systems. Headquartered in New Delhi with a presence in more than 70 countries, BHEL reported provisional revenue of ₹27,350 crore (roughly US$2.9 billion) for FY 2024-25, remaining a cornerstone of India's power generation and heavy industrial equipment sector.
