Basler Electric was founded in 1942 by Carl Basler in a shop in his father's garage in Highland, Illinois, initially rewinding and repairing electrical equipment before incorporating in 1947 with 120 employees. The company introduced its first solid-state voltage regulator, the SR-5, in 1959 — thousands remain in service today — followed by its first static excitation system in 1974 for controlling large utility-scale power generation. Long privately held and family-owned, Basler grew into a leading manufacturer of voltage regulators, digital excitation systems, protective relays, generator controls and synchronizers serving power plants, substations and hydro dams worldwide, before being acquired by Littelfuse in December 2025 for approximately $350 million to strengthen Littelfuse's high-power grid and utility infrastructure capabilities.
