Balluff was founded in 1921 in Neuhausen auf den Fildern, Germany, by Gebhard Balluff, who established a repair shop for bicycles, motorcycles and sewing machines before it evolved into a precision turned and milled parts manufacturer. After World War II, Gebhard's son-in-law Eduard Hermle developed the company's first own sensor — a cam switch for machine tool manufacturer Gebrüder Heller — setting Balluff on its path from mechanical engineering toward electronic proximity sensors and industrial automation. Now in its fourth generation of family leadership under CEO Florian Hermle, and celebrating over a century in business, Balluff employs roughly 3,900 people across 38 subsidiaries and production sites worldwide, supplying inductive, capacitive, optical, magnetic and ultrasonic sensors, RFID identification systems, and IO-Link connectivity products for industrial automation applications.
