Azbil Corporation traces its origins to December 1906, when Yamaguchi Takehiko opened Yamatake Shokai in Kyobashi-ku, Tokyo, as a direct importer of European and American machine tools. When currency shifts made imported machinery too expensive, the company pivoted to localisation, importing unfinished instruments from America's Brown Instrument Company and assembling them in Japan from an office room in the Yaesu Building starting in 1932. Yamatake grew into a diversified group spanning building automation, industrial automation and life automation (gas and water meters), and in April 2012 — more than a century after its founding as an import shop — the company renamed itself Azbil Corporation, a coined name compressing "automation, zone, builder" alongside a new philosophy of "human-centered automation."
