Rohde & Schwarz was founded on November 17, 1933 in Munich, Germany, when physicists Dr. Lothar Rohde and Dr. Hermann Schwarz — who had met as students at Jena University — rented a 120-square-metre apartment and converted it into an electrotechnical laboratory, initially named the Physikalisch-Technisches Entwicklungslabor (PTE).
