STN Atlas Elektronik traces its lineage to Atlas Werke, founded in 1911 in Bremen, Germany, as a shipbuilding company that also produced echo sounders and other nautical instruments following the First World War. The company's electronics division grew through the 20th century under various parent groups including Krupp, before merging in 1992/1994 with STN Systemtechnik Nord to form STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH, a major German defence electronics supplier producing sonar, radar, fire-control systems and marine navigation equipment. Following the 1997 insolvency of parent company Bremer Vulkan, the business was acquired by Rheinmetall and BAE Systems, then split in 2003 into Rheinmetall Defence Electronics (land/airborne systems) and Atlas Elektronik (naval systems) — the latter now operating as part of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), continuing more than a century of German marine electronics engineering.
