SEW-Eurodrive traces its origins to a company founded by Albert Obermoser that fell into financial difficulty during the Great Depression in 1929, before banker Christian Pähr acquired the bankrupt estate and founded Süddeutsche Elektromotorenwerke (SEW) on 13 June 1931 — staff grew to 35 employees despite the company being founded at the worst possible economic moment. After Christian Pähr's death, his wife Kunigunde and daughter Edeltraut ran the company until Ernst Wilhelm Blickle, who had married into the family, took over as managing director in 1945, rebuilding SEW after Allied bombing destroyed its Bruchsal facility during the war. Still headquartered in Bruchsal, Germany, and still led by the Blickle family generations later, SEW-Eurodrive now employs roughly 17,000 people worldwide, manufacturing gear units, electric motors and inverter/drive technology under the MOVITRAC and MOVIDRIVE product lines.
