Johnson Controls traces its origins to 1885, when Professor Warren Johnson — inventor of the first automatic room thermostat — and a group of Milwaukee investors led by William Plankinton incorporated the Johnson Electric Service Company to manufacture, install and service automatic temperature regulation systems for buildings. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers later called Johnson's 1895 temperature control system "the grandfather of all control systems." The company acquired York International (HVAC and refrigeration) in 2005 and completed a landmark merger with Tyco International in 2016, forming Johnson Controls International plc. Today the company's Metasys building automation system — which grew from the 1970s-era JC/80, the first mini-computer-based system for managing commercial buildings — remains one of the most widely installed building management platforms worldwide, found in facilities from the Pentagon to Beijing's international airport.
