Who is Federal Signal?
Federal Signal Corporation was founded in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, as the Federal Electric Company, by brothers John and James Gilchrist along with electrical engineer John Goehst, who started the business with $10,000 in capital to manufacture illuminated store signs. In 1915 the company diversified by acquiring patents for an electrically operated siren, marking its entry into emergency warning equipment — sirens it sold primarily to police and fire departments as well as coal mines needing to warn miners of emergencies. Renamed Federal Sign and Signal Corporation and later Federal Signal Corporation, the company went public on NASDAQ in 1961 and moved to the NYSE in 1969, and today remains a leading global manufacturer of industrial warning lights, sirens and public safety signalling equipment, with 2024 net sales of $1.86 billion.
