ASCO (Automatic Switch Company) was founded in 1888, initially manufacturing elevator compressor controls and generator controls, before inventing the electrically operated solenoid valve in 1910 — a technology that remains central to the company's identity today. ASCO expanded through the 20th century, acquiring micro-miniature solenoid valve maker Angar Scientific in 1982/83, before being acquired by Emerson Electric in 1985. Emerson went on to purchase Europe's leading pneumatic valve provider, Joucomatic, folding it into the ASCO brand, and in 2008 merged ASCO's North American operations with valve maker Numatics (founded 1945) to form ASCO Numatics — with both brands' global operations finally unified under the single ASCO name in 2016.
